On Sunday, 11-26-2000 at just after 9am CT, the local power transformer failed with a big bang. We went on battery backup, until that failed. Our generator failed to start and will go in for service tomorrow. Total time offline was under 30 minutes.
On Thursday 12 noon to 1pm CT dodat.whodat.net was offline to repair a failed power supply fan and to upgrade CPU and double the available RAM. System is now at 400 Mhz.
At 10:30pm CT 10-31-2000 BellSouth was running tests on the ISDN circuits. All internet activites off of our own network, will be suspended during this time. Total downtime was 25 minutes and this issue is still under Ticket #LS012640.
10-31-2000 3:30pm CT BellSouth is running line tests on our ISDN circuits. We shouldn't have be down for more than 5 minutes, we were actually down for over 10 minutes. All outside internet activity was unavailable during that time. Ticket #LS012640 has been assigned by BellSouth.

PSInet at 4:00pm CT 10/25/00 Ticket #20396402 and Noon 10/26/00 Ticket #20397280 is having high latency issues and are looking into trunk overloading, Packets are being dropped through the Lafayette point of presence. At 3:45pm the router was restarted to clear congestion. PSInet is supposed to report back on the network issue on Friday morning.
10:20am CT 10-21-00 The PSInet Lafayette, router and dialup server, are causing high latency. No timetable has been given for when this issue will be cleared up. This resulted in my router getting congested and I forced a restart to clear it up. More than likely I'll restart it again when this issue is resolved. Downtime for the restarts is less than 1 minute. Ticket #20392333 has been assigned.
9pm 10/3/00 PSInet's point of presence was down in Lafayette and I rerouted through Virginia, however it appeared to be very congested. I awaited callback to see exactly what the problem is in Lafayette and when it was to be repaired. I tried to reroute through New Orleans and Houston with no success, so it appears to be some long distance circuits are also effected. The problem appeared to be in the fiber connection in New Orleans, and it was causing major congestion. Total outage lasted about 45 minutes and I was able to restore the connection through Lafayette. NETOPS Ticket #20375145 was issued for this event.

Wednesday Sept. 20th 9:30 PM CT. The Lafayette POP died and was unable to route network traffic. Ticket #20361526 & CS20361810 were issued for the duration of the event which lasted under 45 minutes. By the time I caught the event and went to reroute through Virginia, service was restored.
Sunday Sept. 17th 9:30 PM CT. It wasn't an outage per se, what happened was that PSInet had latency problems. Latency causes high ping times between you and were you want to go on the internet. What normally should take 200ms is taking 1 second or more, to transact. PSInet had an outage issue in New York city, but that shouldn't have had an effect on us here. Ticket #20357574 was been issued for the duration of this event. In addtion Ticket #csat-2675157 was issued as well.

Friday, 4-14-00 11:30:00 CDT BellSouth unexpectedly cut over the central office in Lafayette to the new 337 area code. This action was supposed to take place on April 5th but wasn't. Todays action was without notification and there was no way for me to know when they were going to do it. Luckily it didn't cause a bigger outage than it did, we were only down for about 10 minutes, the length of time for me to detect it.
Friday, 04-14-2000 at 10:00:00 CDT I cut over our backbone to switched 100 mbps service. This will allow all network activity to double in speed over past performance. Our routers and servers were restarted to be able to better track the new network performance. Downtime was a matter of seconds and should have had minimal effect on anyone.
Tuesday, 04-11-2000 We might have encountered some busy signals this morning before noon while BellSouth corrected mistakes they made in the rollover orders for the new lines that were installed Monday. Line capacity has been increased by 30% and this brings us back under a 4.5:1 ratio of customers to phone lines. I try to keep it under 5:1 and we've constantly added capacity as the needs arise. During 1999 for instance, telephone capacity was increased by 150% as I strive to keep my customers satisfied. Currently I'm working on getting the internet bandwidth increased by a minimum of 100% as usage increases. Currently we are running in the 50% load range of available internet capacity, during peak times.
I had BBS.WHODAT.NET offline for about 5 minutes at 11:45am 3/15/00 to do a RAM upgrade from 64 to 128 megs. This will allow the server to run with more connections than previously allowed and help move the email traffic that much faster.
NETOPS 20147142 was assigned. Washington D.C. had a switched routing failure and it is effecting several of their major cities. We are hubbed through Dallas and it is disconnected at the moment. This issue has been taking place since 9:30pm on Saturday 3-5-00 and is expected to be cleared by 8am. on Sunday 3-6-00. There is no way for me to route areound this problem at this time.

2/15/00 BBS.WHODAT.NET was down for maintenance. I backed up the primary SCSI drive and moved all the data over to a 27 gig IDE 7200 rpm drive. The process began at 3am and was completed by 4:27am. No mail or data was lost, this activity caused users to not be able to send or receive mail through this server until the process is completed, also during this time period, KBON's Audio stream was disabled.
